Analyzing Larva Behaviors using a Laser Stimulus

Drosophila (fruit fly) larva have a small number of neurons (~10,000), making them a great candidate for tractable experimentation using somatosensory stimuli.  This study explores the behavior of 30-100 freely crawling Drosophila larvae during and after various forms of stimuli including noxious heat, vibration, air current and optogenetic.  The results showed that significant reactions were recorded for numerous types of stimuli, providing a much better understanding of the neurons in Drosophila and the behavioral reactions that occur as a result.
