Correlation Vs. Multivariate Algorithms for Material Identification

This article discusses the two most common approaches used for on-board analysis on handheld Raman spectrometers.  Raman spectroscopy is one of the most widely used portable techniques for rapid identification of unknown compounds (such as the testing of fine chemicals, measurement of pharmaceutical ingredients, or authentication of drug compounds).  The economic and technical benefits of handheld Raman spectrometers have been well discussed in open literature, but the different statistical algorithms used for onboard analysis of spectra are not often addressed.
