B&W Tek’s newest patent has been awarded for a unique technique for performing Raman spectroscopy deep into a highly scattering medium. Conventional Raman scattering has thus far been restricted to surface/near surface analysis for a “barely-transparent” medium due to extremely high scattering. With B&W Tek’s new technique, the scattering is compensated for by using a spatial light modulator to shape the wavefront of the laser beam before entering the medium. This allows the laser beam to be penetrated deeply inside the inhomogeneous material, thus stimulating Raman signal from within for both trans-reflectance and transmission spectral analysis. Using this novel technique, transmission Raman analysis can be performed through a large pharmaceutical tablet with thicker coating for quality inspection and counterfeit measurement. It also makes it possible to identify narcotic substances without opening a paper bag.
